Baked French Toast Casserole
(From Paula Deen, of course)
Serves: 6 to 8 servings
1 loaf French bread (13 to 16 ounces)Serves: 6 to 8 servings
Butter, for pan
8 large eggs
2 cups half-and-half
1 cup milk
2 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Dash salt
Praline Topping, recipe follows
Slice French bread into 20 slices, 1-inch thick each. (Use any extra bread for garlic toast or bread crumbs). Arrange slices in a generously buttered 9 by 13-inch flat baking dish in 2 rows, overlapping the slices.
In a large bowl, combine the eggs, half-and-half, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt and beat with a rotary beater or whisk until blended but not too bubbly. Pour mixture over the bread slices, making sure all are covered evenly with the milk-egg mixture. Spoon some of the mixture in between the slices. Cover with foil and refrigerate overnight.
The next day, preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spread Praline Topping evenly over the bread and bake for 45 minutes, until puffed and lightly golden. Serve with Maple syrup.
Praline Topping:
1/2 pound (2 sticks) butter
1 cup packed light brown sugar
1 cup chopped pecans
2 tablespoons light corn syrup
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Combine all ingredients in a medium bowl and blend well. Spread over bread as directed above.

Thank you for posting this - I think I may have to make it for Sunday! Gotta love Paula Deen!
um...yum! I wish I could just come over to your house to eat it:)
p.s. I have a SINFUL white syrup recipe that I always make for french toast or pancakes.
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup buttermilk (I have substituted milk with a little lemon juice if I don't have buttermilk)
Bring to a boil.
Remove from heat and add...
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp baking soda
It foams - serve warm - DELICIOUS!
Erica, I have that exact same recipe (with only slight variation) that we call "Buttermilk Syrup" and it is just as you describe...incredible!!! I hear rave reviews every time I make it. Oh, and I'm glad to hear that you can do the old milk & lemon juice substitute in a pinch. Thanks for sharing.
It was heavenly! Thanks for sharing!
Looks amazing! I'm going to have to try it...and since I am still in emergency preparedness mode - that Buttermilk Syrup recipe is a great one to keep around, you may not store maple syrup, but you could probably whip up the 'white syrup'
